Fes has been occupied for centuries and has more than 1 million people. But the old city has fewer than 50,000 which swells 10 times with the arrival of daily tourists and others. The winding streets can be impossible to navigate without a guide and getting lost could be more of an adventure than anticipated. Also donkeys have right of way as they are often the primary means of transport in the narrow pathways.
