Signs Signs, every way a sign

Our second leg is taking us to Cállela, a fishing harbour with 12 coves connected by a long promenade.

It is known for pine, oak and cork tree forests. Cork is still exported today.

Into the woods

What a difference a day makes. Departing our seaside views we enter the deep woods where our BC friends would feel at home.

Looming rain clouds

Unfortunately today’s weather would be more familiar to our east coast buddies with 95% humidity and threatening thunder clouds.

Even with fewer kilometres to travel the humidity made the hike challenging and we miss the sea breezes from the previous day.

We get an early reward with a historic castle to start the day. Castle of Sant Esteve de Mar is located where an earlier Roman fortification stood. More importantly the castle played a pivotal role in protecting and growing the coastal cities of Catalan.

Then onwards through forests and farmlands as we slowly climb to the highest viewpoint.

And there are gifts for our mycophile friends (that’s you J)

As we round another bend in the trail we glimpse the shoreline across the bay and pretty coloured “Barracas”.

Barracas are the old fishermen boathouses that are fronted by big arched wooden garage doors – they are typical of this part of the coast.

Today these barracas are usually used by the families who own them for celebrations and gatherings. Rarely sold out of the family, they are extremely prized.

I think I smell the sea

Finally we start to work our way down to the now familiar seaside path.

Once more we trudge along cliff side paths and rock shoreline towards our destination.

Seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, we pick up our pace as we anticipate a respite with food and rest.

Finally we arrive at our home for the next two days …including a rest day tomorrow.
